Gunners Davina and Daniel

A collection of Snake bite drinks with real snakes in each bottle - seized by Finnish customs and displayed in the Customs House Museum on the island

Yesterday Davina and I explored the island.

We passed a large communal garden where I asked if I could cut some lovage leaves to make soup with. I was given about 10 leaves (more than enough).

There is an Open Prison on the island. The inmates are the who keep the island meticulously tidy. They cut the grass. On one occasion, one of the prisoners was on a roof - not as a form of protest, but to clean it with a high powered water hose.

In the evening Davina had a suana, and we ate lovage soup.

Ingredients
2 tbsp olive oil
1 chopped onion
4 potatoes cubed
3 cups of water
1 1/4 cups of milk
3 tbsp chopped lovage plus small leaves to garnish soup
salt, pepper to taste

Directions

Heat the oil in a large saucepan
Add onions and potatoes, cook over a low heat for 10 minutes
Add 3 cups water, and simmer until potatoes are tender
Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly
Puree the mixture in blender
Place in a clean pot, add the lovage and slowly add milk
Season, and simmer until heated through
Add garnish and serve
