First day of Davina and Daniel project working with inmates of the Open Prison to produce a Greetings from Suomenlinn from Postcard.
We spent the day thinking about what the group would like on their postcard whether - drawings, slogans or photographs. After collecting ideas the group spent sometime making portraits of each other.
The rest of the morning was spent taking some photographs - one of the prisoners wanted to take a photograph of the nearby theatre, where he worked ten years earlier making props for a production.
To gain a 'birds eye view' of the theatre, all of the group, and Davina and I, scaled some scarily high scaffolding on the island fortress - we were privileged to have a view of the island granted to very few.
In the afternoon, the group took us to more of the places they wanted to photograph - lots of stories and accounts of life for the prisoners along the way. Returning to the studio the group selected their favourite photographs and worked on some darkly humoured slogans.
